Rationale

This bibliography aims to be useful to students and researchers alike. For this reason, it starts with a description of Peirce’s primary sources and their editions, listing them chronologically with the initials habitually used by Peirce scholars to refer to them, and then proceeds thematically, dividing the body of secondary literature according to their main topic. For example, the first division is between general studies, which comprises introductory studies and biographies, and particular studies, which includes topics like phenomenology, semiotics, and philosophy of science. The themes are listed alphabetically and you can use the Table of Contents below to navigate them. Originally, this bibliography listed only monographs, with the exception of a list of papers appeared on Italian journals. The present version (September 2020) is enriched with papers from a broader range of journals. Without pretence of exhaustiveness, we hope to capture the liveliness of contemporary pragmatist discussions and to better reflect the development of current research. Please feel free to suggest new entries by emailing our Editorial Team!

Primary Sources

During his lifetime, Peirce published a tremendous amount of papers, reviews, scientific reports. His manuscript legacy is however even more striking: more than 100,000 draft sheets, of which 50,000 still waiting to appear in an edition. Most of this material is today preserved at the Houghton Library, Harvard. In this section, you can find the list of volumes containing a great part of Peirce’s edited production (i.e., edited during his lifetime) and a part of his unpublished writings.

All the editions listed below are an important source for Peirce scholars, for different reasons. Historical editions, like the Collected Papers o Chance, Love and Logic, were for a long time the main point of access to Peirce’s thought. Therefore, they are today especially interesting from the perspective of a history Peirce’s reception, or for retrieving passages which do not appear in more recent editions. (You can consult the manuscripts table to see if a manuscript has been published and where). A word of caution: the material constituting the Collected Papers is organised thematically rather than chronologically, which means that drafts from very different contexts and times are often merged.

The critical edition of Peirce’s works is the Writings of Charles S. Peirce: a Chronological Edition. At present (2020) the volumes 1-6, 8 have been published. They cover the period 1857-1892. Volume 2 of the reader The Essential Peirce contains essential writings of the period 1893-1913.

Recent editions, while they are not the critical edition, still aim at offering rigorous research tools to investigate Peirce’s thought with historical accuracy. Examples are Logic of the Future (edited by Pietarinen in 2019), which collects a great part of Peirce’s logic manuscripts, and Selected Writings on Semiotics 1894–1912, edited by Bellucci in 2020, which groups together manuscripts on semiotics from Peirce’s mature production. All editions of Peirce’s writings are listed below in chronological order, preceded by the initials usually found in the literature.

MS:     The Charles S. Peirce Papers, 1787-1951, MS Am 1632, Houghton Library, Harvard University. The Houghton Library stores “more than100,000 working pages and drafts” (as reported on their website). For the great part, they are also preserved on microfilm. The Microfilm Edition of the Charles S. Peirce Papers in the Houghton Library of Harvard University (Cambridge: Widener Photographic Services, 1964; supplement 1971) consists of 38 reels (35 mm). It is also present on CD-rom at the Philosophy Library of the State University of Milan. Recently, the Houghton library  started a project of high-quality digitalization of the manuscirpt pages, starting from the 50,000 still unpublished pages. These resources are open access. The Humboldt University of Berlin also digitalised 50,000 pages of Peirce’s manuscripts, which can be viewed on their website. See Digital Resources and How to Quote for more tips on the manuscripts and on their editions!
